As a lifelong resident of Maine, I truly love the way of life that our great State allows us to enjoy. My career background is in affordable housing in which I worked for 40 years at different Public Housing Authorities. Prior to retirement in 2014 I served as the Executive Director of the Augusta Housing Authority for 27 years. During those 27 years we were able to assist over 650 individuals and families (many with disabilities) with their rental payments, ran a successful Family Self Sufficiency Program and also a Home Ownership Program which assisted several families in the purchase of their first home. After retirement I wanted to give back to the community in some way so when I was asked to serve on the Board of Directors for Families Matter, Inc. I immediately accepted. In serving on the Board I have come to realize what a wonderful service this company affords to the adult community with intellectual disabilities. The Staff of FMI is totally dedicated to serving all who attend Program and give 100% to ensure each individuals experience in wonderful and satisfying.

My name is Bridget McCabe, she/her/hers.  I became interested in working with children with disabilities through my connection with the McNaughton family who were friends and neighbors as I grew up in Farmingdale, Maine.  Their daughter with Downs Syndrome and a foster child with autism grabbed my interest and curiosity and never let go.  In 1984 I graduated from the University of Maine at Machias with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education.  My full time job after graduation was Residential Director for  Sunrise Opportunities in Machias supporting adults with disabilities.  In 1997 after completing a Masters of Science degree in Human Service Administration began working in Portland for Goodwill Industries of Northern New England as Director of Residential Services.  Eight years later found me working for Residential Resources as an Associate Director supporting shared living, case management, and various other areas.  I currently work at Group Mainstream (GMS) supporting the case management, home support quarter hour/community support services 1:1, and training departments.  Over the years it has been my honor and privilege to serve on many community non-profit boards and was thrilled to be invited to serve on the Families Matter Board of Directors.   My curiosity was peaked early in life regarding growing up and living in this world with a disability and it turned into a lifelong passion and career.

I am the mother of a Families Matter, Inc. consumer, and a lifelong resident of Gardiner. My son, who has autism, has been a member of the FMI “family” since 2011. I first began working with the Board of Directors in October 2016 and served as the Board Secretary until January 2020, at which time I was nominated and elected to become a member. FMI provides a much needed service to adults with intellectual disabilities and autism, and employs a very caring and supportive staff. I am thankful that my son, and I are a part of the Families Matter, Inc. “family.”
